What We Do
The mission of the Virginia Athletics Foundation is simple: to raise money to support the overall scholarship and operational needs of the University of Virginia Athletics Department to provide student-athletes the opportunity to achieve academic and athletic excellence.
For many of our student-athletes, an athletics scholarship is the key that opens the door to a first-class college education at the University.
Beginning in the 2004-2005 academic year and for the first time in its history, the University of Virginia Athletics Department fully funded the maximum number of scholarships that the NCAA allows for its 25 varsity teams. This is an equivalent of 316.6 full scholarships— nearly 450 student-athletes were provided nearly $9.72 million in athletics scholarships in 2006. In addition, the Foundation provides $900,000 to the Athletics Academic Affairs Office that provides individualized academic support to U.Va. student-athletes.
You can contribute in a variety of ways. The most common is through annual giving, which includes the “Friends Of” programs where you can give directly to a specific sport. Others include capital projects, endowments, and planned giving. Fifty-two percent of donors to the Virginia Athletics Foundation are alumni of the University, and the remaining majority are parents, friends, and fans of the Cavaliers.
Investing in the future of our student-athletes symbolizes your commitment to ensuring that U.Va. continues to be one of the premier academic and athletic institutions in the country.
