Three Join the Foundation Board of Trustees
 

The Board of Trustees of the Virginia Athletics Foundation is pleased to welcome three new members to the Class of 2009. Joining the board is Scott A. Dockter, L. White Matthews III, and Julious P. Smith, Jr.

Dockter ('89 McIntire) is currently the President and CEO of PBD Worldwide Fulfillment Services in Alpharetta, Ga. Dockter played varsity tennis at U.Va. from 1985-89 and was the first recipient of the Craig Fielder Award for Comeback Athlete of the University, and the Norton Pritchett Award winner as the Most Valuable Player in 1988.Dockter and his wife, Sally, have four children: Jack, Kathryn, Sarah, and Jefferson.

Matthews ('70 Darden), is the former Chief Financial Officer of two large public corporations. For two years, he was Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer and member of the Board of Directors of Ecolab, Inc. Prior to joining Ecolab, he was the Executive Vice President-Finance of Union Pacific Corporation and member of Union Pacific Board of Directors. Matthews was the Corporation's Chief Financial Officer for 10 years.

Matthews is currently Chairman of the Board of Ceridian Corporation of Minneapolis, Minn. (human resource solutions) and Director of publicly held Imation, Inc. of Oakdale, Minn. (data storage), Matrixx Initiatives of Phoenix, Ariz. (pharmaceutical) and of privately held Mercantile Funds, Inc. of Baltimore, Md. (mutual funds).

He has two children – Courtney (’99 CLAS), and Brian, a Darden first-year student.

Smith ('68 Law) is the chairman and CEO of Williams Mullen, one of the largest law firms in Virginia. He has been recognized as a leading Corporate/M&A attorney in the U.S. by Chambers USA.

Smith has been honored numerous times for his dedication to community service. A member of The Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club Hall of Fame, he is a recipient of the Richmond Touchdown Club's Micheli Award for his contribution to Richmond youth. In 2003, he received the Patrick Henry Public Service Award from the Wilson Center for Leadership in the Public Interest at Hampden Sydney College and in 2005 he was the recipient the Richmond Bar Association Public Service Award.

In addition, he is past chairman of the Greater Richmond United Way Campaign and a former Virginia state chairman for the U.S. Olympic Committee.

He serves on several corporate boards including: LandAmerica Financial Group, Inc.; Hilb, Rogal and Hobbs Company; The Mutual Assurance Company of Virginia; Quarles Petroleum, Inc.; and ServiceMaster Associates of Virginia, Inc.

Smith and his wife, Sherrill, have three children, Julious P. III, Stephen, and Sarah Gray Parrish.

Members of the Foundation would like to thank the outgoing class of 2006 for their dedicated service: Leslie B. Disharoon of Charlottesville, Va., Marvin W. Gilliam, Jr. of Abingdon, Va., and Alan A. McClure of Atlanta, Ga.
