Annual Campaign

The Virginia Athletics Department receives no funding from the Commonwealth of Virginia for the University, and generates its own operating revenue primarily through fund raising, ticket sales and sponsorships.

The Virginia Athletics Foundation Annual Campaign plays a vital role in providing a significant amount of this revenue.  Through the generosity of donors, the Foundation has been able to fund the maximum number of scholarships allowed by the NCAA for the 25 sports programs at the University. Scholarships costs continue to increase each year as the University reviews its funding needs to provide the highest quality education experience. Athletic scholarships, which include tuition, fees, book, room and board, increase at the same rate as for all students at the University. As the athletics program continues to grow, additional resources are needed for each of our 25 sports to operate and compete at the National and ACC Championship levels.

The Virginia Athletics Foundation Annual Campaign provides support to Virginia Athletics in the following ways:

  • Provide the NCAA maximum of 316.6 athletic scholarships
  • Fund the Academic Advising Program for all our student-athletes
  • Enhance the operational budgets for our Olympic sports
  • Meet other operational needs within the athletics department

Gifts may be designated as:

Unrestricted: An unrestricted gift will go where it is needed most and includes support for football and men’s and women’s basketball

Friends Of: A Friends Of gift is directed to support the scholarship and operational costs for an individual Olympic sports program, designate by the donor. The “Friends Of” program is a great option for student-athlete alumni, parents and individuals with a special interest in a particular sport.

Additionally, donations can go further through:

Employer Matching Gifts: Many corporations will match eligible gifts made by an employee to a non-profit organization.

Young Alumni Program: The Foundation will match each dollar you contribute beginning in your graduation year and for the following three years (four years total). Alumni who have obtained a graduate degree in the last two years are eligible for the dollar-for-dollar match their graduation year and the following year. Maximum match: $5,000 annually.
