Deven Patel

Men's Golf

Excellence on and
off the course

Deven Patel is a fourth-year member of the Virginia men's golf team with ambitions of playing professionally on the PGA tour. Born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, Deven attended Johns Creek High School and was named Georgia's prep player of the year before joining the Virginia golf program as a first year in 2021. Deven is also a recipient of the David G. Williamson Jr Memorial Scholarship, awarded to a student-athlete on the Men's Golf Team. Over the past three years, Deven has not only developed his skills on the course but has immersed himself in the Virginia community, meeting new people and supporting other athletic events.

Deven's decision to attend the University of Virginia was influenced by the comprehensive support provided by the athletic department, which he has found crucial in his development as a student-athlete. “It has a great balance between academics and athletics,” Deven explains. “The athletic department does a great job of providing everything the student athletes need, so it was an easy choice for me.”

Outside of golf, Deven enjoys watching other sports and is a big fan of basketball, football and baseball. He considers himself an extrovert which drives him to meet new people as well as enjoying the outdoors and engage in the Virginia community, both on and off the course. “I love watching basically every sport”, he shares. “Going out to watch fellow athletes at UVA has been so fun for me”. In his final year at Virginia, Deven looks forward to continuing his involvement in both athletic and social aspects to make the most of his remaining time.

Deven's success on the men's team helped Virginia to match play quarterfinals for the second consecutive season at the NCAAs as a third year, which he describes as his favorite athletic memory while being here in Virginia. “It meant a lot to our coaches, but especially to us players. The support we got from everyone in the athletic department and all our teammates was awesome.” Entering the 2024-25 school year, and riding the momentum of last year, he is ranked No. 11 in preseason PGA Tour University poll. He plans on becoming a professional golfer after graduation and mentioned that the PGA has “done a great job allowing college golfers to go straight into professional golf.”

Deven's career at Virginia has been marked by impressive achievements and contributions to his team's success. Apart from his national recognition by the PGA Tour University poll, as a third year Deven showcased his skill and consistency on the course, finishing 59th overall in the NCAA Championships. At the Baton Rouge Regional, he finished 15th with a score of +2, 217, which contributed to Virginia's second-place finish, the best regional showing in program history. Additionally, Deven highlighted his talent in his first collegiate win with medalist honors at Hayt Collegiate at Sawgrass CC. In his first year, he was named the VaSID Rookie of the Year for the state of Virginia and as a second-year Deven was named to 2023 VaSID All-State team. His achievements on the golf course have not only highlighted his talent but also his dedication to his sport and his team.

As he continues to excel, Deven remains deeply appreciative of the support that has enabled him to achieve his success. “This building [Dean Family Golf Center] right here wouldn't be done without the donors' help and support”, he remarked. Deven's appreciation extends beyond facilities and into the personal relationships he has built as spoke on his relationships with donors, “playing golf with them, hanging with them… has meant a lot to me and… it's hard to beat.” As Deven prepares for the next phase of his career, he carries with him a deep sense of gratitude for the support and relationships he has built along the way while representing the University of Virginia.
